Disbanding NTSA will not reduce the number of accidents on Kenya's roads, Transport CS James Macharia has said. Macharia gave his remarks on politicians' calls on Friday, saying what the National Transport and Safety Authority requires is support.
"Disbanding NTSA is not a solution. Let us take a holistic view of its mandate. It has numerous functions besides road safety," the minister said in an interview with The Star. "As much as it is the lead agency in matters of road safety, it is not the only one that should implement the safety."
Senate Minority leader Moses Wetang'ula is among politicians who want the authority dissolved, following accidents in which at least 3,000 people died in the last 12 months. Wetangula, who is Bungoma Senator, accused NTSA director general Francis Meja of sleeping on the job. He cited Sachangwan accidents which have seen the government assign Sh500 million to the construction of a dual carriageway.
