A 70-year-old granny from Muiri village, Gatundu North escaped death narrowly after her muddy house collapsed following a heavy downpour on Monday night. Three of her sheep were also rescued.
Witnesses said poorly constructed drainage system on the 39-kilometre Mataara-Gatukuyu road diverted water to the house.
They said their farms have also been destroyed. “Were it not for my dad who heard the screams, our grandmother could have died. The water carried away all her households," the granddaughter said. Peter Kimani, a village elder, said that the old woman buried her husband just two weeks ago.
Area MP Annie Wanjiku Kibe who visited the family asked the contractor to ensure proper drainage system is constructed. "The contractor has agreed t rebuild the house for the old woman. We have agreed that he will ensure that the drainage system is done professionally to avoid these kinds of disasters in future," said the MP.
